The following was submitted by Frank Marlowe: While metal detecting on Bank Street in front of the old Post Office around 1978 to 1982, I found a 1956 Decatur High School class ring, probably a ladies ring (quite small). There are no initials on the ring. If you lost yours before 1983 I might have it. You can contact Frank Marlowe @ 256-303-2214.

George Cassimus, son of Patsy Byars and George Cassimus underwent surgery last week for a brain tumor. During or immediately after surgery, he had a stroke. He is now in a rehabilitation center. We ask our classmates to pray for him and his children, and for Patsy and George and family. If anyone has more definitive or updated information on anything we can do to help them, please contact Janet Bentley (jbentkey@aol.com) or Rupert Billions (rlbillions@embarqmail.com). We will share this information via the website (www.Decatur56.org) or the DHS Facebook page. To our knowledge, Patsy and George do not have or use a computer, so anyone who knows other classmates without computer access, please share this prayer request with them.

The following letters were received from the Lori Shelton Alliance for Colon Cancer Awareness (LSACCA) and signed by her son, David Goldfarb, and daughter Julie Lin-Nichols: To DHS 56 Class -- Thank you for your generous gift of $56 to LSACCA on behalf of the DHS Class of 1956, which we received on May 8, 2009. Your support is helping us develop our education campaign to enhance the public's awareness about colon cancer and expand on the quality and type of information available about this preventable disease. [This was for the donation made from the Class Treasury.] A second similar letter acknowledged a second gift of $56 made by individuals designated as "Lori's friends at Somerville Road Elementary School." I join Lori's children in thanking you all for your willingness to take yet another small step in furthering cancer research and in doing so, to let her children know that the Class of 56 cares about all of its living and deceased members. As much as I hate to always be sharing
sad and tragic news, I believe many of you will want to know of the great loss experienced recently by two of our classmates, Gerald Gunn, and his wife, Joan (Barrett), and Jan Barrett Bawsel, Joan's sister. On Saturday, May 2, Gerald and Joan's daughter, Karen, and her husband, Mark Roden, were involved in a two-motorcycle/automobile accident on I-65, near the Lacon exit. Mark was killed instantly, and Karen was injured. This is all I could learn from the Internet. My sister, Sue,
was in Decatur for hers (and Joan's and Jean's 50th class reunion). After Sue returned to Texas, she was talking with another classmate, who told her what had happened. As is often the case, I know of nothing we can do except pray for the entire family, including Karen's
and Mark's two children, a daughter and a son. If you would like to send a card(s), here are the addresses for Gerald and Joan and for Jan. Gerald & Joan Gunn, 509 Holmes-Drake Road, Falkville, AL 35622. Jan Barrett Bawsel, 1420 Carol Lane, Decatur, AL 35601. I do not have any contact information for Joan's twin sister, Jean. Neither Gerald & Joan nor Jan have an email address listed in our directory. If anyone learns of anything we can do, either individually or as a class, please let me and Rupert know.

PATSY ENGLE DUKE, 71, of Decatur died Monday, April 27, 2009, at her home. Visitation will be this evening (4/29) from 6 to 8 p.m., and funeral services will be Thursday, April 30, 2009, at 11 a.m., both of which will be held at Roselawn Funeral Home.
Officiating will be her brother-n-law and Hospice of North Alabama Chaplain, Rev. Charles E. Maples, and her pastor, Rev. Charles Sparks. Friends Herschel Wells and Carolyn Logan will provide music of her two favorite hymns, “Blessed Assurance” and “Rock of Ages.”
Patsy was born March 6, 1938, in Austinville, now Decatur. After
graduating from DECATUR HIGH SCHOOL IN 1956, she became a telephone operator for SouthCentral Bell. After the Decatur area switched to the dial system, she moved to Cullman, where she met her future husband, Bill Duke. They were married in 1959 at Brookhaven Baptist Church. After living in Cullman for a short while, they moved back to Decatur, where she enjoyed being a homemaker and raising her two daughters alongside her husband....
Survivors include her twin sister, Peggy Engle Maples...
Memorial requests include Hospice of North Alabama.

The obituary for Sue Burns Barnett, which Rupe has so thoughtfully posted for us, requests donations to the American Diabetes Association, the Cancer Foundation, or Annie Armstrong Missions at Sue's church, First Baptist in Tuscaloosa. Unless anyone objects, I will ask Bill & Suzanne to make a donation from class funds to the American Diabetes Association, as it was listed first. Suzanne, Peggy (Francis), and I will attend the service tomorrow; Bill has an out-of-town meeting. As an individual friend, Pat Cornell is sending flowers to the service. Please keep these classmates and their families in your thoughts and
prayers:
1) Pat Cornell has been hospitalized several times following gall bladder surgery. The ensuing complications and treatment have caused increased symptoms from the myasthenia gravis, with which he was
diagnosed last year. Also remember his wife, Ellen, who is his caregiver and a wonderful person.
2) Carolyn Pratt Brown's husband, Ray, has some critical health issues. As of the last email to me (Janet), he was to see a surgeon
for a planned course of treatment. Carolyn and Ray were planning to be at the mini-reunion but could not make it. It was so nice to have them at the "Big 5-0" and at the Stones' cabin the next day.
3) Margaret (Peggy Totty) Dunivant shared some good news on her recent 19-month battle with cancer and follow-up treatment. I don't think she will mind my quoting her email to me verbatim: "Today is Wednesday,
October 1, and a very exciting day after seeing Dr. B...The results of my recent MUGA Heart Scan and P.E.T. Scan were normal! That's the best news I've heard in 19 months! These are the indicators of the success of the extensive treatments I've had these past months! Dr. B.,[my] Oncology Doctor, was very pleased and looking at the parameters feels I'm in the lowest percentage of people which cancer can reoccur..no 100% for anyone.Thank you for your prayers, love and support.. Just keep me in your daily prayers.. Bill (husband) and I will deeply
appreciate your continued help.
4) Suzanne McBride Stone has had some problems related to last December's surgery (but not to the cause of the surgery) that have
caused some discomfort and pain.
5) Others have shared continuing health and personal issues . . . and there are no doubt others from whom I have not heard. Please remember ALL of your "antique" classmates with gratitude for wonderful friendships that have lasted over 50 years!
My little "theater memento," a miniature jukebox alarm clock that plays tunes from "Grease," is signaling that it's time to go vote. I promise to write an update on the mini-reunion and send to all. Always

As some of you are aware, Suzanne McBride Stone had surgery at UAB on Dec. 10, 2007, for esophageal cancer. The good news is that a) it was discovered at a very early stage, b) her progress through and after the surgery has been remarkable, and she is now back at home (stayed with her daughter in B'ham immediately before and after surgery) and recovering. Here is the message that husband Bill sent out last Friday: "It has been exactly 1 month since Cissy went under the knife and had the cancer removed. At Dr. Cerfilio's office at Kirkland Clinic she had the feeding tube removed, was told she would probably never see him again, told to stop all medication, eat what she wanted, was told her cancer was a Type 1A, and when she asked if she should see an oncologist, he said "If you want to, but if they mention radiation or chemo, just get up and leave". No cancer anywhere! How's that for a success story? And an answer to the many prayers offered. Thank you all for your prayers and support!
Bill"

I received notice in mid-October that Teledyne (my former employer) had matched the $500 we donated in memory of Mr. Teague to establish a science classroom at Falkville Elementary School. YEA! I then called my contact person, Mike Tarpley, to let him know that I had been notified and that I hoped he and the school were aware that "the check's in the mail." He said that are well on their way with the classroom setup and would like for me and any class members who can to come see it. When he contacts me, I will send out an email and post it to our website inviting you to join me. Thanks so much to all . . . just received another contribution for this project . . . thinking about making a $56 contribution to this each year also . . . let me know your thoughts. (We have enough money to do this if you agree -- this is NOT another solicitation . . . LOL!

We received the following note from the local chapter of the Alzheimer's Association regarding our gift in memory of Skipper Richardson:
Dear Decatur High School Class of 1956:
Thank you so much for your recent contribution of $56.00 in memory of Mr. Frank Richardson. It is difficult to find the perfect words to express our appreciation for your generosity. Every person and organization that has supported us over the past several months has enabled us to make a difference in the lives of Alabama's Alzheimer's patients and their caregivers. Each gift truly matters.
With your gift, we are able to provide families with resource materials, support groups, educational seminars, and family support opportunities. It is encouragement such as yours that enables us to fulfill our mission and to help the people who need us most.
Any requested notifications have been sent [to Skipper's widow, Charlotte]. Once again, thank you for thinking of us at this time.
Sincerely,
Mary Lou Kraatz, M.Ed, Regional Director

This is a "for the record" message regarding contributions that have been sent to me for three $56 memorials: one to the American Lung Association in memory of Patsy Segars Grisham, one to the Alzheimer's Association in memory of Skipper Richardson, and a $56 contribution to our Class Treasury for the inevitable next need for a memorial.
I went online and made the contribution to the American Lung Association in Patsy's memory, and Rupe has posted on our website the nice thank-you card that will be sent to her daughter and family. Thanks to information supplied by Bob McManis, I was able to talk to Skipper's widow, Charlotte*, and learn of their request at his death for memorials to the Alzheimer's Association. The head of the local organization is a friend, so I called her, got details, and have a check ready to mail to her tomorrow, with Charlotte's address for sending a recognition of this $56 gift from the Decatur High School Class of 1956. When that gift is acknowledged, I will also send Rupe a note for the website. And, as soon as I can meet with Bill (Stone), I will give him a check for $56 for the Treasury.
With 11 classmates contributing, we have enough to cover all of this. Two or three have mentioned sending me money, and if that happens before I see Bill, I will deduct that amount from the check I give him
for the Treasury. As I said in earlier emails, it has made me feel good that we, as a caring group, are doing something to make the survivors feel better. Thanks to ALL for making this possible!!!
JANET
*I am also sending Charlotte a copy of our booklet/DVD for her and her children.

ANYONE READING THIS WHO IS INTERESTED: PLEASE EMAIL JANET AT jbentkey@aol.com
For those interested in contributing to the John H. Teague memorial fund, a way has been determined to ensure that our contributions are tax-deductible. The way I'm about to describe will also make it possible for me to get contributions via checks/cash made to me matched. However, if anyone prefers to make their contributions direct to the fund, I will get the exact address for mailing, but I cannot get them matched unless I give one check directly to the recipient and apply for the match in my name. My single check or anyone's individual check should be made payable to Falkville Elementary School, and in the "For" section, note: "John Teague Science Classroom." Anna Henderson, one of the trustees of the fund is a teacher at Falkville Elementary, and I/you can send checks to either her or another trustee, Mike Tarpley, with whom I have been working. They will make certain that our contributions go to equip a special science classroom at this school for elementary students. I think it is a NEAT idea! One thing: we need to act quickly for the match, as I am planning to retire by the end of June, and retirees cannot apply for matching gifts. I have $250 to date that will be matched (checks to me).

They are so sorry to have missed the Reunion but could not attend because of Tom's health problems. Tom would love to hear from classmates or DHS friends who remember him before he left to join the Air Force prior to our 1956 graduation. After Tom's first retirement, they bought school buses that they lease to the county school board in their hometown of Smyrna, Tenn. They are selling them, so "if you know of a church or group interested in a bus, ours are for sale.
